Today's anniversary show, another from a great early-Spring run in 81, is from Boston Garden, my old stomping grounds. I've mentioned this show in the past, but today's anniversary makes it worth bringing up again. The quality of this recording is pretty damn good given how terrible the acoustics in the old dump (just being realistic) were. The Jack Straw opener really hops and get the crowd fired up nicely. But the real gem of the first set is the closer. Bobby whips out an extraordinary Let It Grow, which Jerry lights up from start to finish. But at the end, when the crowd is fairly certain that Bobby is about to tell everyone to "hang loose", Jerry decides he's having too much fun and turns the corner nicely into a smokin' Franklin's to close the set. Without a doubt, does NOT suck. The second set lineup looks fairly straightforward, but is played with fire and stands on its own as a very strong effort. 5 star show? Not quite, maybe 4 to 4.5, but there are certainly 5 star moments. Definitely worth a little of your time this AM.

Almost forgot, the Birdsong is truly a wonder.

I'll try not to jump posts again...sorry.

what's up morning man!

i know i am late to the party but, i think in part due to the residual effects of the acoustic run in 80, I KNOW NOW, 1981 SMOKES!

as far as the DAY IN HISTORY goes, the first Europe run is right around the corner -- with the whole run at the RAINBOW being just hot hot hot -- and then they go back in the fall for a longer stay with many more exciting shows....

of course there's all manner of great stuff in between that deserve praise and discussion...

but to the matter at hand: NICE CALL -- i picked it up right at the FRENETICally paced Franklin's -- whether the drug problem was about to be in full bloom or not is NOT EVIDENCED by the music -- jerry sounds full of energy and inspiration....

sometimes you get the feeling of TIT for TAT, oneupsmanship between Bobby and Jerry -- and you get that here.... and the second set, SORRY MAN, ain't nobody should complain about a TERRAPIN opnener.

sweet......

Your thought on the "one upmanship" has even more creedence if you listen to how huge the Let It Grow is. It can be interpreted that Jerry recognized how large it really was and decided that HE wanted the last word, and did so with the sudden whipping out of a big Frank's. (notice how I politically avoided saying "whipping out his big Frank's"...that would be tasteless)

Another Note: Jerry continues his dominance in a stellar Playin'. Nice, nice stuff.

In case you haven't guessed, I'm re-listening to this show right now. And so glad I am.

why settle for 3 diamonds when Maya is rated 7?

Apologies - Maya is 7, not 6. Only $31,000 for the entire day...

Deadicated to Spitzer

I took my troubles down to Madame Rue
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine

I told her that I was a flop with chics
I've been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign
She said "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine"

She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink"
It smelled like turpentine, it looked like Indian ink
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink

I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine

Trust me. After watching many Bruins and Celtics games from behind a post or staring at the overhang of the section above me or attending concerts that basically consisted of one loud and prolonged cacophony with no discernable words, the last thing I would do is seriously compare the place to anything approaching Eden. Perhaps I took a little too much liberty with the title of the thread, but it was purely based on the quality of show.
